The Gisborne correspondence will go forward per Mokoia 011 Wednesday, 20th., __ The annual St. Patrick’s Day social, which is to be held in His Majesty’s Theatre on Thursday evening, is always looked forward to, and there arc indications that this year’s fixture will be even . more enjoyable than any of its predecessors. Nondancers arc to be catered for this year, and spectators will he admitted to the theatre on payment of a shilling. At the meeting of the Harbor Hoard yesterday afternoon the Clia rman said the property rate would have to he looked into. Owing to the increased valuations the rate this year would bring in more than they were legally entitled to collect. They were only entitled to collect enough to meet interest charges, and, perhaps, sinking fund charges. He thought the rate could ho reduced by 25 per cent. At the Police Court yesterday morning, before Messrs 11. Lewis and J. AY. Bright, J.P.’s, A\ r . J. Courtney appeared on. a charge of stealing a silver watch and gold chain, valued at £5, the property of John Limberg, seaman on the ketch Coronation. Ho had been remanded for the probation officer’s report, which was unfavorable, and lie was sentenced to three months’ hard labor in lvapier gaol.

Ward is going to open classes for the tuition of both lady and gentle man pupils who may desire to take up the study of those two highly interesting and useful subjects—the Maori language and typewriting. At the conclusion of the inquest held in the Court House yesterday, the foreman of the jury brought the matter of remuneration lor jurors under the notice of the Coroner. Tlio jurors had been present at both sittings and on each occasion half a day had to be sacrificed. They expected to got 8s for the whole affair, but only received 4s, the Coroner explaining that the remuneration was at per hour. The matter is to be brought before the Minister of Justice, with a view to getting a more equitable scale of payment.

Mr. Whinray spoke up on behalf of the fishermen of the town at yesterday’s meeting of the Harbor Board. The fishermen, lie said, complained that they had no permanent place to berth. It seemed wrong that coal barges should occupy good berths and pay no wharfage. The fishing boats should have those berths. The fishermen should rather he assisted than discouraged by being shifted about from place to place. They asked that the river near the bridge be dredged to enable them to use berthage not available lor deeper boats. The Chairman promised to look into the matter.

The formal opening of the newlyformed chess club will take place on Saturday next. The club fills a long felt want, and without much public attention being drawn to it, now lias sufficient members to assure its success. It is to bo hoped that the young people of the town will bo attracted to the many recreative and educational advantages of this ancient and intellectual game. A study of chess teaches the player the necessity of careful study before committing himself to a move, and the disaster that follows a hasty and unconsidered or false one. It teaches concentration of the mental faculties and the yalue of looking ahead. In fact it well deserves its name of the king of games. It is a mimic battle of life, and tl>« best study for the warrior.

All those present were appointed to the committee, one of the chief aims of which will ho to get an enabling Bill passed through Parliament in the coming session. A suh-eonunitteo was appointed to wait on ATr. Townley, the presont Chairman of the, Harbor Board to ascertain his views on the, matter, and they will meet him in the courso of a day or two.
