CRICKET SELECTIONS.

To the Editor of tho Gisborne Times. gjj. y propos of the threatened visitation of cricketers against our local celobrities, I have read with interest tlio various remarks in your correspondence column. They call it a cricket carnival; the carnival is on at present judging from the various comments being passed. As a cricketer of many years standing, and ono capable of judging the merits of different players, I would venture a selection, as follows: Emanuel: Captain; he is an excellent bat, and when in form, could lather the ball well and shave his opponents as close as any man in Poverty Bay. MacLaclilin: A good bat, hits hard, fields well; never gets snotty when playing. Pasley: Another good bat, the best point in the Bay, and has learnt the advisability of standing well away from tho wicket. Elisor: Deserves his place in the team; he is a good field, can always be relied upon to make runs; rarely misses a catch. Uridge: Has shown excellent form, and would act as an excellent bulwark to the team. AYhite: Deserves his place in tho team; is an excellent corespondent, capable of judging his own point well. Lang: Deserves his place as a bowler, and should prove invincible against Auckland, provided he cultivates the preliminary hop before delivery in the next fortnight. Maud: Another good bat, can bo relied on for runs, and as a change bowler would be useful. Hill: Deserves his place, provided he does good practice in the next few days, and does" not proceed to practice without supplying a good ball. AA 7 itty: A good fielder; also reliable bat; never loses his head; lias a good reach, and stands well at the wicket. Sims: Deserves His place as a really good all-round cricketer, and as a howler would be invaluable. I might suggest as emergencies, half the Te Rau team and half the Union team. It would be well for the following to be present, and seo tho matches in order to learn a few points: Gibson, Hallamore, Robinson, Ludbrook, AlcDonald, AlcConnell, Cato, AVack, Collins, Torkington, Babbs. As an umpire, Thelwall cannot be surpassed; his decisions woidd he so useful, especially to a break bowler. Trusting this will find favor. —I am, etc.,

THE KANAKA. CRICKET^CUTS. To the Editor of the Gisborne Times. Sir,—After perusing “Disgusted’s” letter in this morning’s Times, I have arrived at the conclusion that his suggestion should be adopted. By doing so, AlcDonald and Lasker could be replaced by Thelwall and Hill, of the United Club, and the combination thereby considerably strengthened. “Disgusted” is certainly entitled to the thanks of cricketers generally for his very sportsmanlike suggestion, which contains a healthy sentiment entirely free from petty club feeling.—l am, etc., AVSfNDERER.

p.S.—On second thoughts, perhaps, it would be unwise for the selectors to act on the above suggestion, for although it is to be hoped that no violence will be offered to them, it is rather suggestive to learn that they anticipate trouble, having been detected a few days ago critically inspecting and morbidly admiring the works displayed in the yard of a local monumental mason.
