There was a good attendance. Tho totalisator investments amounted to £6857, making a total oi £14,276 for tho two days, an incroaso on last year’s figures of £1261. Tho results wore:— Ornahu Hack Handicap Hurdles, 60 sovs, 11 miles: Gold Dust 1, Morriwai 2, Oryx 3. Also started: Canteen, British Navy, White Squall, No Shot, Glenafric, Kaharawa. More than 26,000 horses wore last year shipped from English farms and fairs and saloyards to tho chief ports of Holland and Belgium, and sold for human food.
Dairymen in the Manaia district (Taranaki) are doing well at present. Ono farmor with an 800-acre dairy farm received £350 for his produce for last month, and another with 500 acres made £550.
An agitation is afoot in Foxton to lire vent the Council giving away tlio rights of the citizens to a privato company to light the town. Exception was taken at a bare majority of the Council dealing with the matter. Rats are very fond of grapes, as Mrs. R. Prouse, of Levin (Wellington), has tliis year discovered to her cost, she having had a considerable quantity destroyed in her vinery this soason by these mischievous animals.
Tinware factories in the colony liavo increased in number from 12, in 1891, to 54, in 1906; and iron and brass foundries, boilormaking and kindred engineering establishments (exclusive of Government railway workshops) from 79 to 132.
