CHESS CLUB
A meeting of the committee of the Gisborne Chess Club was held last evening, Air. Crawford (president of tho Club) being in the chair. An apology for absence was received from Mr. Cogar (secretary), who was suffering from an attack of influenza. Mr. J. A. Connell reported in his interview with the Library Committee, in reference to tho use of a rtcm, that he had arranged with the
committee to get the use of the spare room until it was required for the extension of the Library, the club to - find its own furniture and gas meter. The report was unanimously approved, and a vote of thanks was passed to be forwarded to the Library Committee for their generous treatment of the Club. A subcommittee consisting of the president and Air. Blackburn was set up to arrange for the necessary furniture. It was resolved that the Club-room be opened for play on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The opening night was fixed for Saturday, the 23rd inst., when a simultaneous match will be played by Air. J. A. Connell against all comers. All*. Connell will also give an exhibition of blindfold play after the match. The function will be advertised later, lady chess players and intending members being specially invited. The president was authorised to advertise the opening night. The membership fee was fixed at 5s entrance and 5s subscription per annum. Already about twenty gentlemen have signified their intention of becoming members. It is anticipated that one or two telegraphic matches will be held later on in the season. Alembers spoke hopefully of the prospects 'of the Club, and a large number of players were added to the list already in. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded MiieMniSTnessT - ’
