THE MARSDEN CROSS

Press Association. AUCKLAND, yesterday. Tho Marsden cross was unveiled at Rangihona, Bay of Islands, by tho Governor. There was a largo attendance of Europeans and natives. The monumont is one of the most interesting in tho colony. It is erected on the site where the first Christian service was held in New Zealand, conducted by Samuel Marsden nearly a hundred years ago. The unveiling passod with the success befitting an event of such national interest. The Governor said he felt it a great privilege to be permitted to take part in honoring a Now Zealand pioneer. It was often remarked nowadays that Christianity was not making the progress that it should, but with the monument before them they would be able to draw courage by remembering Marsden and the difficulties and dangers that surrounded his work. The monument is in the form of a Celtic cross, 20ft Bin in height, constructed of Melbourne Milestone, and hears tho inscrijition: “On Christmas, 1814, the first Christian service in New Zealand was held on this spot by the Rev. Samuel Marsden.”
