POVERTY BAY CRICKET ASSOCIa ATION. THE EASTER CRICKET CARNIVAL. At the usual weekly meeting of the above association last evening, arrangements were made for the cricket carnival to be held at Easter. Both Auckland and Hawke’s Bay intend sending elevens to Gisborne, but owing to the fact that the Napier association had not intimated the exact date on which they would arrive the drawing up of the list of matches was deputed to a sub-committee consisting of Messrs. Hallamore, Gibson, Maude, and Hill. The East Coast players will also have an eleven down for the carnival, and if possible will meet both Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, and Poverty Bay. Messrs. R. W. Cary, W. Gibson, and J. O’Hara were appointed a selection committee to pnek the re])resentative eleven, and were instructed to select probable players to go into practice right away.
C. Lasker was transferred from the Tarulieru Club to the Te Rau Club.
The Thursday match "this week will be between Union and Common, Shelton and Co.
The secretary was instructed to communicate with all affiliated clubs and obtain a list of pfiayers deemed worthy of inclusion in the representative team, who would be available if selected.
The fact of three visiting teams being pwesent in Gisborne at the same time constitutes a record for Poverty Bay, and should be the means of stimulating public interest in the game, as the crack pfiayers of Auckland, Napner, and the East Coast will be seen performing against the pick of tbe local men. VICTORY FOR NEW ZEALAND. Press Association. WELLINGTON, last night. New Zealand won the second Tes‘ Match by 56 runs. Th nr second in nings was finished off for 249, Williams carrying his bat out for 72, which not only made him top) scorer, but gave him the best average against the visitors. This left M.C.C. 255 to get, and they never looked like obtaining them at any stage of the game. Both Fisher and Upham bowled so w r ell at the start that 40 minutes were occupied in making 20 runs, and before that occurred three wickets had fallen. Douglas and Page put on 50, but never collared tlio bowling, and with greatly improved fielding, things continued to go well for the colonials. The catching in particular was sure, and a running catch by Sale that disposed of Burns, off what looked like a sale hit, was phenomenal. Nine wickets fell for 157, and then Curwcn and May, having nothing to hope for, ran for everything, and for a while bustled the fieldsmen into something like disorganisation. Many of their short runs should have been stop)p)ed, but they went on merrily, each over being expected to finish the game. They had rattled up 41 in a little over 50 minutes when Fisher, off his own bowling, made a good catch and the defeat at Christchurch was wiped out. . The attendance was small, and the wicket pffayed much the same as on Saturday. The Council officials complained of the small receipts on Saturday compared with the number of p)cop)le on the ground, and talk of playing no more matches f]i° r P till some provision is made to prevent people 'climbing over the fences.
