WAIROA NEWS

(From the Guardian.) While proceeding to Morere, Mrs. Sargisson and her son met with an unpleasant experience while desending Whakaki Hill. The horses fell and one of the shafts of the gig broke, the broken end penetrating the groin of the animal.’ Mr P. Sargisson was thrown out of the trap and fortunately escaped with a severe shaking. Luckily Mrs Sargisson remained in the gig, and was able to scramble out without injury. They returned to Wairoa, and no ill-effect resulted with the exception that the pony is rather badly injured, and the gig was damaged. An exciting bolt took place down Marine Parade. Two horses ran away with a chaff-cutter. The animals swerved on turning on to the bridge, and the machine went through the fence into Alexandra Park, bringing up the horses. The rear axle was broken, and the machine otherwise damaged. The chaffcutter belonged to Mr Waene Winiata, who was driving. The horses bolted from the post office. Attempting to jump off he was dragged, his arm being terribly shattered and his face cut, he being

otherwise much knocked about. Mrs Landrekin on Monday received tho sad news that her daughter, Miss Olive Boyd (aged . 20), had died at Christchurch on Sunday of paralysis of the stomach. The circumstances are very sad, as the young lady had left Wairoa on the 12th February, apparently in the best of health, for the purpose of visiting her grandmother, Mrs Ashwin, in Christchurch. Late on Saturday night a telegram was received stating that Miss Boyd was very ill, and requesting her mother to come without delay. Mrs Landrekin left on Monday morning at six o’clock by special coach. The news of Miss Boyd’s death was receivod by Mrs Landrekin at 9 o’clock the same morning.
