THE TRAINING SHIP

The commander of the Now Zealand training-ship Amoknra writes that the secretary of the Marine Department is now receiving applications from boys who wish to join the training-ship. Commander Hooper, in his letter, says the Government are feeding, clothing, and instructing the boys in the sea-going profession, and, in addition to this, are providing them with a little pocket money. The Government also defray the costs of the boys’ passages to and from the ship whether joining or leaving, going on or returning from holiday leave. Holiday leave is granted twice each year, i.c., three weeks at midsummer, and --two weeks at midwinter. Tho kit to be allotted to the boys will be a good, substantial one, and every boy will be well fitted. A good solid bill of fare will be provided, and plenty of it. The boys will havo the necessary amount of clothing allotted to them for holiday purposes. This will bo neatly packed in a strong holdall, specially made for that purpose. It is intended that tho ship shall visit the various ports in tho colony at suitable periods. The age limits, as laid down by the regulations, give the ages of entry at between 13* and 14) years. It is also stated that the ages may be varied by the lion. Minister in charge. It is not generally known that the sea-going profession is open to all and sundry, and there is absolutely nothing to hinder any ambitious boy from rising to the top of the treo in a comparatively short time. Tho first batch of boys have been selected by tho lion. Minister, and will join the ship very shortly. The commander states that lie will bo pleased to reply to any inquiries from persons desirous of placing tlioir boys on tho training-ship.
