A LIQUOR CASE.
AN EXTRAORDINARY TALE

In tlio City Police Court this afternoon,' before Mr Widdowson, S.M., David Morris .was charged with havino- sold alcoholic liquors within the meaning of the Act without being the holder of a license authorising him to do so. Accused, who was defended by Mr Irwin, pleaded not guiltv. Mr J. F. M. Fraser, who prosecuted, said ' that on Sunday, 17th February, the police raided the defendant’s house and found a number of men drinking beer there. Defendant was caught pouring out a glass of beer. There were six glasses of beer on the table and four empty beer bottles in Mrs .Morris s bedroom. There wore six bottles of beer in a box, two in the pocket of a lady’s dress, two more m the pocket of a coat, and three bottles full of beer in a Maori kit under the bed. besides some empty bottles. Const. John Mclntyre gavo details of the raid by him in company with two other constables. Mr Irwin said the house was occupied until last nook bv Mr and Mrs Morris, sour and defendant lived with bis parents. On the preceding Saturday a man who always stayed at Morris s when m Dunedin told a friend to get m a dozen of beer for him, for if ho returned that night it would be bite. Accused,not knowing of this arrangement, went up town on Satuidiu night, and brought some three, gin bottles full of draught boor. Defendant met three men that night and they were drinking at midnight from the stock of bottled beer that bad arrived. Mrs Morns fearing there was too much liquor, had some in her room. After further evidence had been given accused um convicted and fined £2o, mth £ 18s costs.
