Press Association. DUNEDIN, yesterday. At the meeting of the Standard Insurance Company the Hon. J. B. Callan, in seconding the motion for adoption of the report and balancesheet, said one point which was a matter of regret was that underwriting in New Zealand for this year had not been a suepess, but as the Chairman had said, they had to take tho lean years with the fat ones. This year he understood had been a particularly unfortunate one in regard to fires in New Zealand. In connection with that it was an important thing, and he agreed with the directors that the reserve fund should be increased. It was a wise policy. It was satisfactory to see that the investments were good ones. The motion was carried. The retiring directors, Messrs. John Mill and AY. F. Edmond, were re-elected AUCKLAND, yesterday.
A fire broke out on the steamer Onslow at Wliitianga through the explosion ol : signal rockets. The fumes were so bad that the locality could not be reached. The vessel was scuttled to -extinguish the flames. She was floated on the following tide. The damage amounts to £2O. MASTER.TON, yesterday. _ Edwin Meredith, aged 80, an old pioneer, died to-day. He was born in Tasmania, and was a. son of an old Peninsula officer.
