THE EXHIBITION.

CHRISTCHURCH, last night. By common consent the Exhibition of fireworks given on the sports ground to-night was the finest that has yet been shown by the representatives of Pain and Sons. The display was of a floral character, gigantic flaming roses, fuchsias, and other flowers forming a novel and beautiful effect. From nine to ten thousand people are estimated to have witnessed the display. The total attendance at the Exhibition for the day and evening was 13,860. An orchestral concert was given in the afternoon, and Mrs. C. M. Brooke, Of Christchurch, was vocalist at a largely attended concert in the evening. Mr. AV. H. Monk, Sydney organist, whose recitals have attracted a large attendance, will give the last of the series to-morrow afternoon before returning to Sydney. The Bosses o’ th’ Barn Band arrive 1 from the West Coast this morning, and will give performances on the sports ground every afternoon and evening during their 12 days’ season, which begins to-day. A sacred concert will be given by the Band On Sunday afternoon on the sports ground in aid of the colonial mcmoiuil to Mr, Seddou, The Maoris at the pa, wlioso. dances havo won such general admiration, ai-e almost the ontiro troupe who gave hakas and other dances in the Maori opera “Tapui,” performed some time ago throughout New Zealand. The Maoris did not dance ,as they were busy preparing for the sham fight which is to take placo in tlio pa tomorrow afternoon. , Numerous entries are'being received for the pet show to be held in Wonderland under the auspices of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty t„ Animals on Friday, March 8. Mr. Munro has offered a prize of one guinea for the best original essay on kindness to animals, and a second prize of half a guinea will he given. The essays are for girls and boy under 16 attending any school, and must not exceed two pages of foolscap. Entries, which are free, cla.e on P March 4 at Wonderland, or with any of the Society. Purchasers of shilling tickets for the pet show will bo admitted to the Exhibition free Miss Amy Murphy will sing the soprano part in “Elijah when that cratorio is performed by the Ghrist church Society in the concert hall of Wonderland’s numerous attractions is shown hy the fact that already negotiations are in progress for the purchase of several of its sido shows after the Exhibition. Mr Jaques, Government canning expert, resumed demonstrations of fruit preserving after two weeks interval this afternoon, canning pears and apples in sight of about 200 ladies who plied the expert with questions about obstrnse points of process. The demonstrations will be given at frequent intervals during the next few weeks, including several, which will be given at evening. The Wairarapa school cadets, who have beon encamped at the Exhibition, leavo for home to-morrow. Battalions from Hawke’s Bay. and West Coast are already on their way to succeed them A large attendance of children is expected at the Exhibition on Saturday, when the display of daylight fireworks will be given on the conclusion of t]ip native concert by the Besses o' th’ Barn Band. These fireworks are an entire novelty in Hew Zealand, but are stated to be highly popular at home and in America,
