HIGH SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
ANNUAL MEETING. A statutory meeting of the High School Committee was held yesterday afternoon at the offices of Messrs. De Lautour and Barker, Present: Messrs. DeLautour (in the chair), Bright, Matthews, and J. Coleman. The minutes of the last meeting of the committee were read and confirmed.
The Chairman said that this being au annual meeting it was tlieir duty to elect a Chairman for the ensuing year. He wished them to have • a change in the Chairmanship. Air. Coleman proposed that Air. DeLautour continue ill the position of Chairman. Air Alatthews seconded the motion, which was adopted. Mr. DeLautour said he was quite willing to act as Chairman, although lie would have preferred that someone else had been chosen. In regard to the school its condition was not satisfactory. The new headmaster started under difficulties, and it would he necessary to carefully watch the progress of the school. On the motion of Air Alatthews the Committee elected Air Alorgan as secretary and treasurer at a salary of £SO a year.
Mr. Hill, school inspect or, suggested that a bonus of £lO should be given to the pupils who came in the first hundred of competitors in the civil service examinations. The Committee did not discuss the suggestion. Mr. Hill’s report on his examination of the junior division of the secondary department was presented and read by the Chairman. The inspector said that quite a number of pupils absented themselves from the examination. Something, he suggested, should he done to compel the pupils to attend the examinations..
The governors regarded the reports on the school as very unsatisfactory. The Chairman said the report required more consideration than they could give to it that afternoon. Mr. Bright asked if any figures had been received in regard to the matriculation examinations. It seemed that not. a single pupil from that school had passed those examinations. The secretary said that that was so. Mr. Bright said he should like to see a report as to what had happened at the school during the last three or lour years. If the school was to continue its usefulness’ better results must be demanded.
Mr. Matthews said they could not blame the present teacher at all. They could do not good now except to watch the future conduct of the school. On the motion of the Chairman the consideration of the reports was postponed to the next meeting. It was decided to grant William Dunplry .£3O for another year’s instruction in the school. On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr. Bright, 'it was resolved that! the secretary’s salary be adjusted on the basis.of £SO a year fgroin the date of his appointment. Tlio secretary read the general statement of accounts.
Mr. Bright remarked that their finances had improved to tho extent of £350 a year. This was all tho business of interest before the meeting.
