TRAMCAR FATALITY.
CHRISTCHURCH, lust night. An inquest concerning the dentil of Muriel Vera Elizabeth Marks, a girl of 14 years of age, who died as tlio result of injuries sustained in a moving tra.Ticar on the I'apanni road, yesterday afternoon, was held yesterday afternoon. Evidence was given that the child had intended to get out at the St. Albans lane stopping-place, but the car stopped at a loop a short distance from the lane, to allow a down car to pass, and did not stop again at tlio lane, passengers for that stop-ping-place having alighted at the loop. When the car reached the lane the girl jumped off, and struck her head violently against one of the poles, and sustained concussion of the brain, from which she died 20 minutes after. Georgo Grevlan Miller, conductor of the car, said that he knew nothing of the accident until one of the inspectors questioned him about it an hour and a half afterwards. The cars did not stop at the lane if they stopped at the loop. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, and recommended that a guard should he placed along the whole length of the cars, including the rear seats, such as that occupied hv the deceased just prior to her death,also that all cars should stop at the St. Albans lano stopping place.
EXHIBITION RIFLE MEETING. REDCLIFFS, yesterday. Tlio Exhibition rifle meeting opened on Monday in magnificent weather. The shooting was rather slow, and the Otago match, 200, 500, and 800 yards, was unfinished. This match was finished this morning in dull weather, the following being the best scores: —Sontag (Dunedin), Munro (Murihiku), Judd (Ivarori), Collett (Waipawa), 9S; Yeo (Auckland), Burford (Timaru), Thorpe (AA'airoa), Handley, and Kennard (Winton), 97. Later. The Exhibition rifle meeting was continued in fine weather, there being a tricky wind. The Otago match, 200, 500, and GOO yards, was completed. GRAND LODGE OF DRUIDS. NELSON, last night. The biennial meeting of the North Island Grand Lodge ot Druids opened'yesterday, and was continued today, and will probably conclude tomorrow. Officers were elected as follows:—Grand President, Bro. Gilbert, New Plymouth; A’ice-Grand President, Bro. Hunter; Grand Secretary, Bro. Grand, AA’elliugton; Grand Treas., Bro. Fletcher, Wellington; G. Guard, Bro. AA'ade, Gisborne; Junior Past Grand Master, Bro. Bloomfield, Auckland. There was a large gathering of delegates from all parts of the. district, the meeting being the largest yet held. Yesterday afternoon the Mayoral reception was held, and the delegates are being entertained at a banquet this evening. The Trustees elected were: Bros. E. Allen and J. Mackay; Appeal Committee, Bros. Neilson, Allen, Johnson, Mackay, and Mullens. Bro~ Mackay received a vote of thanks for his very valuable services. He was also granted a bonus, and was made a life member of the executive. The rules were amended. The business will conclude to-morrow.

Resolutions were passed exjiressing satisfaction at Dr. Pomare’s refutation of the statement that he applied for permission, for alcoholic liquors to be used at the tangi of Tohu, thanking the Hon. Jas. Carroll for his reply on that occasion, calling the attention of the Alinister of Justice to the lax of the law in no-license districts, expressing appreciation of and sympathy with the efforts of the women suffragettes of Great Britain in their efforts to obtain the freedom and rights which the women of New Zealand possess, protesting against Sir Joseph AA’ard’s proposal that profits obtained by the totalisator he applied to benevolent purposes. Invitations were received to hold the convention of 1908 in Auckland, Kaiapoi, Invercargill, and AA’ellington, and the first was accepted.
BAKERS’ ASSOCIATION. TIMARU, 'last night. The annual conference of the N.Z. Master Bakers’ Association assembled to-day. Nineteen delegates were present, and thore are more to arrive. The annual report stated the yoal had been uneventful so far as trade matters were concerned. No demand had been made for amendment of the current award. The question or licensing shops for the sale of bread had been discussed, and was favored bv the Chief Health Officer and Minister of Health, who also agreed that the practice of exchanging fresh loaves for stale ones should be prohibited. An attempt made to get barracouta loaves classed as fancy bread had failed. The finances were in a satisfactory condition, the appropriation account standing at iAi 7s 8d Some discussion took place on technical education versus apprenticeship, and this is to come up again for further debate.
MASTERTON SHOW. MASTERTON, last's night. The Maaterton Show opened today in tine woather. There was a poor attendance of the public. Ihe exhibits were not up to the previous year. Picker ill, of Birmingham, has been appointed director of the School of Dentistrv in connection with the Otago University. William Bettahy has been committed for trial bn a charge of converting two hundred and seventy pounds hoToncing to the estate of the late Wm Wdkie; and failing to account same.
