Two of those who distinguished themselves in the recent chess championship, Mr A. W. O. Davies, who won third prize in the recent International Congress at Christchurch, and won the championship two years ago at Oamaru, and Mr Claude Sainsbury, who also put up a respectable score in the recent congress at Christchurch, will become permanent residents in this district. Mr SainsImrv has bought a property in this locality. An Irishman who was arraigned on a charge of having stolen a cow was acquitted, his advocate having put forward such a strong defence, and backed it with persuasive eloquence, that the jury returned a verdict of “Not guilty.” Pat was delighted. When he moved out of the court lie was surrounded by some of his friends, who were well aware of liis thieving propensity. “Be sure now, Paddy,” said half a dozen of them in chorus, “did you really steal the cow?” A merry twinkle camo into the Irishman’s eyes. “Well.” he answered, “sure and Oi thought Oi did, but afther hearing pliwat that there counsel said, o’im- thinkin’ that Oi couldn’t have clone!”
