LAND SALE AT GISBORNE.
On Saturday morning Messrs AVilliains and Kettle offered for sale by public auction at His Majesty’s Theatre a number of sections in and around Gisborne and also some house property. The sale was moderately attended, but the bidding was generally slow, and only in one instance did it reach tho reserve price. For many of the sections there was no bidding. The first property put up was Mr Humphrey Bayly’s, consisting of a number of sections and also his house, the whole situated at the corner of AA’hittaker street and Fox street, AVliataupoko. The first section, 1 rood 4 perches, was started at £BS, and withdrawn at £9O. The second section, a quarter acre, tt'as also withdrawn at £9O. The third section, also a quarter acre, tt'as started at £9O, and ran up in £5 bids to £lO5, at which price it was withdrawn. For lot 4, one rood, the bidding stopped at £105; for lot 5, one rood, £l2O tt'as bid, but both lots tt'ero withdrawn. The sixth section offered, consisting of 1 rood 21 perches, tt'as started at £l2O, and ran up to ‘£l4s, at which it was passed. For section No. 7, 1 rood 24 perches, there was no bid. Section 8, 1 rood 28 perches, commenced at £l5O, and u'ent up to £175, for which sum it was knocked down to Mr A. T. Hookey. For Mr Bayly’s house and 1 rood 15.5 porches, £SOO was offered, and there tt'as no advance. The auctioneer remarked that the bouse itself was u'ortli £6OO. He also started that any of the unsold lots would be sold privately at a very low price. Mr A. R. Hine’s Kaiti property situated at the junction of Graham road and DeLautour road was next dealt with. It consisted of twelve quarter acre sections and two half acre sections. Eight of the quarter acre sections were submitted, but the highest price offered, £9O, was belott- the reserve, and all ivere •withdrawn. Sections abutting on Graham, Iranui, and Hinaki roads ivere now offered, but, with one exception, there was no bid for these. For section 6,2 roods, £lso_.was offered, but declined. Mrs B. Sommerville’s property in Riverside road was next put up. It consisted of a 21-room residence and 9 acres 3 roods, 33 perches of land. The bidding began at £1250, and proceeded in £SO bids to £1450. It was remarked that the house was insured for £llOO, but this had no effect on the company. The auctioneer stated that the reserve price was £2OOO, and the property would not be sold for less than that sum. For Mr Harper’s sections in Iranui road, Kaiti—sections 221 and 222 there was no bid. The property of Airs Nora Walker, consisting of one acre in Fox street, Gisborne North, obtained a solitary bid of £3OO, and it was withdrawn. Three sections and two cottages at A\ 7 hataupoko, belonging to Mr Hill, did not obtain a bid. Harris and Iranui road sections, Kaiti, the property of Mr R. Johnston, were offered. No. 1 (30) was passed without a bid; No. 2 (30p), tt'as passed at £135; Nos. 3 (30p), and 5 (lr, with house) were jiassed ■without a bid.
