The grounds were a picture for the time of year, and there was a large attendance. Tho secretary, Air Al. G. Nasmith, had everything in splendid order, and all the officers worked well for the success of the meeting. The sum put through the totalisator was £5799, against £4156 for the corresponding meeting of last year. The results were : SECOND COUNTY STAKES, of 60 sovs; second horse to receive lOsovs from stake. For horses bred in Counties of Cook, AVaiaira, and AA’airoa. One mile.

After a good deal of trouble the field was got away well together, with Bruiser and Gladsinuir in tho lead; then Hinetitamata took up the running and maintained it' for half a mile. To Raliui was lying handy among the bunch, and when rounding the bend came along with . a great rush, taking up the lead on entering the straight, Reay lying in third pi are. Nearing the post Gladsmuir made a great bid for victory, and shot into second place, but the Strowan —Booby gelding had the race well in hand and won comfortably by a length, Hinetitamata and Reay being together half a length behind the second horse. Time 1.44. Dividends, £3 9s and £1 19s; on tote, £Bl7. AIAIDEN SCURRY HANDICAP, of 30 sovs; second horse to receive 5 sovs from stake. For horses that have never won a race of any de-

Amusement’ appeared from the stand to have a clear moving lead of over a length when the word to go was given, the others being sent away well together. Amusement gained on the lead for some distance, and then steadied down in front of the others, while Ruanui ran into a good position, alternating the lead with Amusement. Blue River made a fine run, and San Cruz for a few moments came into prominence. A most exciting race ensued down the straight, Ruanui gaining a few inches over Amusement at every stride. The pair passed the post in even line, the verdict being a dead heat. San Cruz was a length behind, and Blue River well up in the fourth position. Time, 1.4 3-5. Dividends, £7 4s and £1 7s.

Faro was the first to take the leap over the hurdle near the saddling paddock, and Cinque came next. The latter apparently rose to the jump too late, and came down, the jockey (It. Arnott) being laid low. Taniwlia then took up the lead with Morpeth at his girth ; the trio nicely cleared the next hurdle, and thereafter Morpeth assumed command. At the back of the course Taniwlia was fairly disposed of ; but Faro camo again strongly. At the last hurdle Morpeth, with a good lead, steadied down to make sure of a safe jump, and Faro hustled up to the sticks and the indications wore for a most exciting finish, but Morpeth, jumping beautifully, drew away again and won with comfort by two iengths, Taniwlia being about fifteen lengths behind. RACECOURSE INCIDENT JOCKEY’S LICENSE SUSPENDED The stewards of the Gisborne Racing Club yesterday afternoon had to deal with a jockey for using indecent and tlireatenin glanguage. A jockey named Sweeney, the rider of Taniwlia, in the hurdle race, was brought before the stewards at the Gisborne Racing Club’s meeting yesterday on a charge that he had used indecent and threatening language in the Jockey room within the hearing of "young boys and others. Mr. Rae was called on to give evidence, and stated that the offensive language had been used by Sweeney and addressed to Arnott, the jockey who had been injured in the hurdle race. Among other things, Sweeney had threatened to “deal” with Arnott, and stated he wished Arnott’s arm was out of the sling so that he could “deal” with him there and then. The room was full of lads, and the language used, which was of a filthy nature, could be heard at a distance Sweeney being asked if he wished to put any questions said that he did not. He admitted that during the heat of the moment he had used the language complained oik but afterwards qualified this statement by saying that the expressions were not so bad as stated. He went on to give his side of the case, which was that on going into tho room he had asked Arnott how he was, and the latter had replied that he was none the better for his (Sweeney’s) asking. “What is wrong?” queried Sweeney. “You got one on to me, and the first time I get a chance I will put one on to you,” said Arnott, according to Sweeney’s version of the case. There were a number of witnesses called, but in view of the facts being admitted further evidence was not deemed necessary, and the stewards proceeded to discuss the punishment that would meet the case. Mr. Matliewson said it should be substantial, but was not prepared to say whether it should be three or six months’ supension of the license. The Chairman (Mr. Hepburn): I would say twelve months. Mr. Barry: That would be too severe.
The Chairman said there was worse behind, as the accused had been in a state of semi-drunkenness, and complaint had been made to him (the Chairman) against his being allowed to ride at ail. The horse Morpeth had had to steer out of his road to prevent mishap. On the last occasion this young man was here he got into trouble, be “put up” for the balance of the “put up” for the balance of the seaseason —the end of July. Mr. Barry said he was quite in favor of such conduct being put down with a firm hand, but to him the proposel seined a hard one. The Chairman: I do no ttliiiik it had enough. If you submit it to the Metropolitan Club they will make it more. Some further discussion arose as to coming to an agreement on the term, and the Chairman suggested that they should make it six months’ suspension. Mr. J. C. Parker agreed with Mr. Barry, and said they ought to give the lad a chance. These young fellows got excited, and said things which they no doubt should not have said, and a good deal of which they did not mean.
Mr. Bennett said Mr. Parker’s view was very good, but in this case it was the second or third chance. “Why, he only holds his license on sufferance now,” added Mr. Bennett, who then explained that the license was held on probation. Mr. Barry: Three months’ suspension at this time of the year when all the riding is to be done would be punshiment enough. Mr. Matthewson: I say six months, but will be glad to make a modification if any reason for it can be shown. The Chairman: I think the reason is all the other way. Mr. Harding said that whatever they decided it would be better to be unanimous. Mr. Matthewson: I have no prejudice one way or the other. Mr. Barry: Nor have I. Mr. Harding thought that three months would lie sufficient. The probability was that the young feliow would not get a chance again. Mr. Wyllie: If he is only on probation now, three months’ suspension will be quite as severe on him as six months. The Chairman: Yes; but it would not sound as if we thought his • onduct so bad.
Mr. Wyllie: His behaviour warrants more. After some further remarks, the Stewards unanimously agreed to make the term of supensiou six months. POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB ANNUAL MEETING.
