A new police constable lately took charge of one of the goldfields stations. He is a genial soul, and, though he came full of zeal for the enforcement of the law, ho noted that there* had been some laxity in the customs of the district, and was not anxious to apply the screw too suddenly. The night after his arrival, lights were burning in the bar of the local pub. to an hour when they certainly should not have been, and the policeman strolled along to ascertain what was going on. As he came up to the door, he heard the clink of glass inside. .He knocked and called for someone to open to him at once. “Whoever the divil ye arc,” came a voice from inside, “ye’ll have to have patience. I can’t serve yez all at once.” And the clinking still went on.
