Alarm • was occasioned among passengers in a race train on tile Geelong lino on Now Year’s Day owing to the presence of a well-known snake-charmer named Michael Morrissey. The latter produced from under his coat a large snake, which he allowed to bite him several times, and he then showed the people how to use a ligature and antidote. While addressing the assemblage the man placed the snake on the ground, and a potato-digger from Dungaree suddenly hounded into the ring and crushed its head with the heel of his hoot. Morrissey threatened an action for compensation for the loss of the reptile. At Christchurch Henry Mason claimed £4 10s from llichard Cavill (the well-known Australian swimmer), for damage caused to a suit by his being tipped out of a canoe into the river. The plaintilf gave evidence that he was boating in the river near the dam on a recent Sunday and was tipped out by Cavill and another man who were bathing in the river, with the result that his suit was saturated and when he dried it it had shrunk and become too small for him. H. Donovan, who was with plaintiff at the time, and who was also immersed in the water, gave similar evidence. Cavill denied the assertion that he tipped the plaintilf out of the canoe. It was a man named Jackson who upset the boat. Jackson admitted that he put the occupants into the river. At the Magistrate’s instigation he was joined as a defendant, and judgment was given against Cavill and himself for° £3 and costs. THE PERIL OF OCR TIME. In Lung Disease.
