STRIKE ON WATERWORKS.
NAVAHES AYANT Is A DAY EXTRA One of the employees states: A strike occurred on the Gisborne reticulation works yesterday, or at any rate men who had insisted on being paid an extra shilling a day were told that tlieir services would not be required at the higher sum. On the men being paid nearly all of tlio navvies joined in a demand for nine •shillings a day instead of eight shillings. They were told that the higher amount would not he given; and that those who did not care to continue at the lading rate would be Paid ofi\ Accordingly, our informant states, about seventeen men elected to cease work, a few remaining at the old rate. The trouble does not affect the caulkers and pipe layers, who would no doubt he entitled to more if the unskilled labor received higher pay. Most of tlio men have been working for about a fortnight, though a few were on some weeks previously. The employers are Messrs Gordon and May, of Auckland. On the’one hand it is believed that labor will be easily procurable at 9s per dav, while the employees say that with lost time, and the cost of living, the margin is not sufficient for work of tile kind.
