DUNEDIN, Saturday. At the Anglican General Synod tho Primate was requested to cable a message of sympathy from the Synod to the Church in Jamaica, and sufferers by the earthquake at Kingston. The Doan of Dunedin moved that tho following recommendation of tho Dunedin Diocesan Synod be referred to a Commission for enquiry and report (1) That as the Senate of the New Zealand University has failed to obtain legislative sanction for its recent proposal to establish a faculty of theology and to confer degrees in Divinity, it is dosirablo in the best interests of tho higher learning that further effort should be made by tho Church to encourage theological study and research ; (2) that the Board of Theological Studies bo reconstructed as a senatus acadcmus or faculty of theology and be empowered by the General Synod of this province to conduct examinations in theology and to confer upon persons duly qualified the degrees of bachelor, master, and doctor in theology. Tho motion was carried unanimously.

Thoro wero only two Pacific linos in cxist'onco, tho Pacific Mail line and tho Oceanic, and tho Pacific lino by tho rocont building of four now steamers had concluded their building programme for tho next, few years at any rate, and he doubted whether they would consider it sufficiently worth their while to build now ones under subsidising conditions so that it meant tho probability of tho Ocoanio lino being tho only Pacific trading company immediately ready to fall in with tho proposal. As a matter of fact, continued Mr. i Cockroft, his company ho supposed had been tho most assiduous workers towards tho realisation of this Bill.
