Two well-known young ladies of the garrison town of Neiss, 'in Upper Silesia, arc under arrest for a practical joke in tho shape of highway robbery. A couple of officers of the garrison were driving to the home of a comrade recently, when the carriage was suddenly “held up” by three persons who emerged from the roadside. While one of the trio, a man, stopped the'horses, the two others, who were cloaked and masked, attacked the officers with clubs. The officers overpowered their assailants after a struggle, and handed them over to tho police, when it was discovered that the prisoners were women. They said they had planned the affair as a joke, but they will have to stand their trial, and will probably be severely punished.

Twelve hundred now Government inspectors, writes a New York correspondent, are now constantly in and about tho moat slaughtering and packing houses, enforcing the legislation that resulted from the revolting revelations of a few months ago. Tlio proper sanitation of the plants lias boon rigidly insisted upon. It is eloquent of .tlio laxity and slovenliness that formerly existed that of the JOO largo slaughtering plants in the. country there was not one that did not need cleaning up and altering in order to comply with the requirements of the new Act; and some of them needed to bo practically rebuilt. On the day tho Bill became effective - about forty of them had failed to conform to tho sanitary regulations, and consequently tho-r products were barred from interstate commerce. But very soon they found it to bo the part of wisdom io accept tho dictates of the department. Tinned meats put up under the now conditions contain tho magic Government stamp; “Inspected an.! passed” ; and this is accepted as pretty conclusive that tho contents of tho package are wholesome, clean meat. Moreover, it is insisted- that the labels state exactly what tho tins contain, so that tho day of veal masquerading as potted chicken seems to have passed. As" showing what a last amount of ground tho American packers have to make up, the exportation figures for August are of interest. -In that month the exportation of tinned beef totalled 659,12< lbs., as against 5,048,533 lbs. in tin corresponding month of last year.
