DUNEDIN, yesterday. Kobert Ingram Stewart, a laborer, aged 21, committed suicido at South Dunedin last night by shooting himself in the head with a revolver. CHRTSTUHURCH, yesterday. ' The long-continued drought and heat bavo dried up immense stretches of grass land in all parts of Canterbury, and great danger of firo has resulted. From all parts come reports of grass fires, some caused by careless tramps, others by sparks from railway engines. At G!eomark 4000 acres of grass was burned, and in other parts several thousand acres wore destroyed. REEFTON, yesterday. Jeremiah Grant, a young man, was killed by. a fall of stone in the Keep-it-Dark mine. Deceased was a native of New South Wales. WELLINGTON, yesterday. The statement by the New York correspondent of the Melbourne Age that the Japanese have the option of purchase of the Spreckels line of 'Frisco steamers, and that they will ultimately gain possession of the line, was brought under the notice of the Premier. Sir Joseph said he was rather inclined to doubt the accuracy of the statement, but he considered the matter of sufficient importance to institute enquiries as to the truth of the statement from Mr Spreckel agent at Auckland.
