Getting a few yards along the i treet the “sergeant” is alleged to ave spoken thus to the offending ne: “Look here, you seem to be a ecent chap, and would probably like o be out of gaol, and not make a itiblic appearance before the magisrate. Pay me 10s, the usual fino, ind you can go. I’ll send the contable to accompany you home.” The ,0s was handed over, and the holiday naker, happy that he had so narrowly escaped several hours’ waiting in iurance vile, strode along airily with the “constable.” The “sergeant” ivent in the opposite direction, and as the distance between them increased the “constable” had misgivings about getting a share in the plunder, and ho abandoned his charge to meet his confederate. The third party was determined, however, not to have the terms of the arrangement so abruptly altered, and pursued the “constable.” They were together when a real officer of the law came on the scene, and the holi-day-tripper appealed to him as to the arresting “constable’s” bona iides. The later was thereupon apprehended on a charge of obtaining money by threat. After hearing evidence, tho case was dismissed,
