THE EXHIBITION. ' Special to Times. Cll IIISTCHUItCU, last night. Tlioro was another exceptionally largo attendance' at the Exhibition to-day. The conclusion of the Scottish Society’s Sports, which provided some good contests, was well patronised. The pipe band contest, which Commenced with the quickstep competition yesterday, ended with a selection of Scottish airs. In the competition today tho .Dunedin pipe baud were the winners on points in both divisions of contest, Waimato and Ashburton hands tying for second place. There were 'no other competitors. The prize for tho best lament, composed by a player for tho late Mr. Sodden, was won by 1). AlcKeehnio, of Dunedin, whoso beautiful and typical lament was excollontiy played. The dancing of McKonzio Forbes, of Wanganui, was again conspicuous, the New Zealander defeating tho Scottish champion Centro. I There was an attendance of GOO at tho Fijian dances to-day, and of 1902
yesterday. Immediately after 10th instant the Fijians will pay a short visit to Dunedin, returning afterwards to the Exhibition. A unique ornament is expected to arrive to-morrow by tile Gothic, in the form of a bubblo fountain, for the Exhibition. This will he worked by gas pressure, and will send up ten thousand bubbles every minute. There is only one other similar fountain in the world, am! the general manager has arranged through the High Commissioner to have this olio specially made tor the Exhibition. There will also arrive by the Gothic a collection of products of English sweated industries, whudi has been sent out by the High Commissioner, and will hud place in the Labor Department’s Court. There was a large attendance in the Concert Hall this afternoon to hear Miss Millicent Heywood, solo pianist, and a programme was given by the orchestra of tlio Besses o’ the Barn Band, which gives the first performance on 19th lust. It- will only play as a band on tlio Sports Ground in the evenings. In tlio afternoons, however, seine of the soloists will probably give items in die concert hall and at entertainments given by tlio orchestra.
The next display of Rain’s fireworks will be given on Alonday next. There is an "entry of 600 for th." Dog Show, which takes place to-moi-row and Friday. This constitutes a record for the colony, and visiting fanciers state that arrangements are the finest they have ever seen in this colony. The entries include a number from Australia, and a good variety of recently imported dogs. This evening again there was an unusually large attendance at the Exhibition. The chamber music concert by Miss Amy Murphy and tho orchestra was largely patronised. The numerous side shows have
never done such continued good business as lately. Last night some of them had to close the doors to keep out the crowd, and a daily attendance of 8000 at “Wonderland” is becoming quite the usual thing. The imitation of a portion of the Hot Lakes district, including a model geyser, which throws up water to a considerable height, boiling mud pools, etc., is attracting hundreds of people daily, and those who have visited Rotorua speak highly of the verisimilitude of the reproduction.
The pictures in the British section of the art gallery have now been sold to a total value of £BOOO. On days when sixpence is charged for admission, the attendance often mounts
to 800 a day, and on Christmas Day, when the same charge was made, visitors to the art gallery totalled 1063, though the Exhibition was not open till the afternoon. On free days, Thursdays and Saturdays, the attendance is, of course, much larger. Mr. Longden, who is in charge of the British art exhibits, expresses very great satisfaction with the attention they have received. The motor launches on the Avon, now that the warm, still evenings have commenced, have great attractions for a large number of visitors.
