THE EXHIBITION. SPORTS GATHERING. Special tp Times. CHRISTCHURC FI, last night. Successful would be a mild term to apply to the Scottish Society’s gathering at the Exhibition to day, or to the attractions of the day generally. The Scottish contests drew competitors of the highest calibre from all parts of the colony, and the attendance of the public, totalling some 4500, was only a few hundred short of the record crowd at' tracted to the sports ground by the first performance of the firewfilkers. The competitions were excellently managed, and the judges were enthusiastic in their praiscof the high stand urd shown in piping and dancing. Pipc-Alajor P. S, AlcCordale, of Sydney, the judge, said that the piping was excellent, the organisation of the gathering splendid, and the competitions generally of sufficient merit to rank very well with large contests of a similar character which he had seen in all parts of the world. The amount of prize-money was, he thought, unique. Air Robert AXcPhprson, of Collar, Now South AValcs, who is another of the judges, said that lie had competed in all the best sports gathetings in Scotland, and had never setn better dancing. He thought the contests would lead to
intercolonial and international competi
(ions of a similar character, which would bring Scotchmen the world over into closer touch. The gathering generally was far ahead of anything be had expected to see in the colonics. Center, of Edinburgh, won nearly all tho prizes to-day in piping, and Forbes AlcKenzie, of Wanganui, won nearly every dance for which he entered. The competition will be concluded to-morrow.
Tho general manager estimates that of the 29,000 people who visited the Exhibition yesterday 25,000 were present together in the evening. To-day’s attendance, if the evening figures were not counted, would no doubt bo several times as large, and yesterday’s similarly diminished. Seldom inis there been a more sustained attendance from
fin only hour, but the evening crowd can hardly be expected to compare with that of yesterday.
Air Alunro cabled this morning congratulating Pain and Son, of London, on the great success of their first fireworks display. Those wlio have seen similar pyrotechnic exhibitions at tho Crystal Palace say that they haye never
witnessed anything finer than tho dinplay last night. Soventobn nioro of theso displays will bo givon at weekly intervals during tho- continuance of tho Exhibition.
The attendance in tlio Concort Hal last night, wlion Miss Amy Murphy sang achieved a record.
A largo rotunda is being crcctod in tho centro of tho sports ground for tho performances 6f tho Besses o’ tho Barn Band, tho first of whioli will bo given on Thursday, lOtli instant. Tlio prico of admission to tho ground will bo ono shilling, and 1 an extra shilling will bo charged for reserved chair accommodation near tho rotunda.
For tho Dog Show on tho 3rd and 4th inst. very complete arrangements liavo been made, and a largo attendance is expected A largo contingent of Wanganui natives aro expected to arrivo very shortly at the pa, where they will give dances. Songs by the Cook Islanders, and dances both in tho morning and aftoriioon by tho Fijians, formed a much appreciated portion of tho varied programme of entertainments offered at tho Exhibition to-day.

There were only eight cars, two of which were merely touring to competo the journey from Napier to Wellington, tlio others having met with mishaps. Two of the competitors lost their way, and much time in getting back to main roads. Most of the Cadillac cars came through the test fairly well so far as known. The 10 h.p. Cadillac, driven by R. A. Dexter, and 15 h.p. Darracq, driven by W. B. Leyland, are about equal for first place. Tho steamer Gothic, which arrived
