Press Association. AUCKLAND, Saturday. Lees and Son’s loss by the fire in their gum store is over £SOO, covered by a ■policy in the Northern Assurance office. The building was owned by F. W. Smith, and insured in the United and Marine for £IOOO. The damage is about £2OO. E. B. Dufaur’s stock was damaged by fire and smoke to the extent of about £7OO. It was insured in the Victoria for £SOO. Mellveen’s stock was damaged by smoke and water, and was insured in the State fire office for £llOO. THAMES, Saturday.
Information has been received by the Hon. Jas. McGowan as to the results of
the essays on the mining industry of New Zealand, its present conditions and best means of improving the same. Sixty competitors forwarded papers to the examiner. Judging resulted as follows : First prize, 50 guineas and gold medal, R. MclDtosli, Mines Department, Dunedin ; second prize, 25 guineas and .silver medal, Clias. Williams, Reefton, who had a School of Mines scholarship ; third prize, 15 guineas and bronze medal, J. McCombie, Karangahake, manager of Talisman mine. Major Wynyard pot having recovered from his injuries, sustained in the match here, did not proceed south with the team last night. He is under treatment at a private hospital. The Chief Justice gave judgment today in the case of Pybus v. Pybus, in which divorce was sought on the ground of constructive desertion. His Honor held that a denial of marital rights under the circumstances did not point to desertion sufficient to enable petitioner to obtain a decree. CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday.
At the chess tournament Edwards beat Gifford at the eighth move, and closed the shortest game ever played in a New Zealand Congress. Tho Australian and Now Zealand lawn tennis championship tournament concluded to day in fine weather. Heavy rain overnight made tho courts heavy, and a delay of about an hour occurred before play could be resumed, but the grounds generally were much benefited by tho change in the weather. Good progress was made during the morning, the handicap events and a few championships being got oft. Following were the results : New Zcalaud men’s championship singles, first round ; Fisher beat C. Cox, 6 4, 6-4, 0- 2 ; Aitken beat C. F. Sa’mond, 6 —2, 7—5, 6-4. Second round: River beat S. Brown, 6 3, 2 —6, 6 0, 6—o ; H. Brown beat L. Bonnington, 6 -3, 6—2, 4_6, B—6 ; Heath boat 11. Swanston, 6—2, 6—3, 7-5.
GORE, Saturday A sudden death occurred at Gore yesterday afternoon. Mrs J, Jamie, an old resident, was talking to her daughter in a shop in tho main street, when she said she felt ill, and fell forward and expired almost immediately, An inquest was deemed unnecessary, as deceased had suffered for a long time from a heart affection.
