The Gaumont Chronophone.
The Otago Daily Times says : “ The Gaumont chronophone combines and presents synchronously the work hitherto done by two machines —the cinematograph and the graphophone—and there can be no doubt that it is to revolutionise picture shows. The time is near when complete dramas will be thrown on the screen and. acted and spoken by this machine, or some perfected machine on the same lines. In the meantime Messrs Stoneham and Morrison, who commenced a season at His Majesty’s Theatre, have got first foot in with a series of chronophone filmrecords that should do much to recommend the entertainment to those who like good pictures, The chronophone numbers included selections from ‘ Maritana,’ ‘ Veronique,” and 1 The French Maid,’ and a laughing song by a celebrated comediau. The combined machine is worked by one operator from the stage, where are the motors that drive it. The cinematograph portion in front of the house is connected with the stage by cable, and the whole of the work is done by electricity, Should the voice hasten before or lag behind the picture a liitle switch can regulate it in one second. The graphaphone, or rather, the eyclophone, is an extremely powerful instrument, that produces a fine, big volume of sound. Leave out itlie chronophone numbers in the night’s entertainment, and those present would still have seen a picture show that challenges comparison with any that has come this way.” The c-ompany commences their Gisborne season on Wednesday next.
