A case in which a young Australian, who has since landed in Auckland, received harsh treatment at the hands of the immigration authorities at San Francisco has been brought under the New Zealand Herald’s notice. Ac cording to information elicited, the young man in question booked a passage at Sydney for San Francisco by the mail steamer Sierra on October 15, expecting to readily get work at his trade in that city. On arriving the passengers were put through an examination, which merely consisted of lifting up the eyelid. Three of the number were set aside, and subsoquently locked up, but they got ashoro in the absence of the “ guard.” Our informant was at large for five days looking for work, but meeting a steward off the boat he was told if he went back he would get a fair examination. He says ho was not further examined, and that ho was “ bluffed ” about a report having to be first sent in by the captain. The result was that he was locked up with the two others referred to until the boat sailed, and was then told he was to be deported, because he was suffering from the troublesome eye affection, trachoma. Ho claims that ho fulfilled all other requirements. Highly incensed at his treatment, and wishing to satisfy himself as to whether he was suffering from the disease stated, he submitted himself to medical examination at Auckland, and the doctor consulted informs us that the man has never had trachoma, and is absolutely free from any affection.
