HOUSE OF LORDS INSISTS ON
AMENDMENTS.

The House of Lords, by 138 to 52, adopted Lord Lanadowne’a amendment protesting against the House of Oommous’ rejection of the House of Lords’ amendment of tho Education Bill en bloc, the protest being made on tho ground that such aotion was an innovation of constitutional procedure. Lord Ripon vehemontly affirmed that the House of Commons’ aotion was quite constitutional. Lord Lansdowaß then moved that the House of Lords insist on their amend., meets, since the concessions announced by Lord Crowe left tho Bill in a shape in which it wa3 impossible so accept it. By their oomplete denial of freedom to teaohera Government had raised innumerable obstacles to a settlement.

In tho House of Lords Lord Crewe said ho considered tho concessions regarding teachers considerable, but the Opposition really claimed on the third olause that schools should bo denominational sohoola. It was mockery to »sk Liberals to vote money fer such an objtos. He warned tho Opposition it wonld never again to receive such large concessions. Government refused to accept an iota of responsibility for tho I'l-jeoiion of the Bill. Noble lords and prelates must bear tho responsibility, It was likely that in the coming months many harsh things would ba said, and some harsh things done. Received 10.46 p.m., December 20. Lord Lansdowne’a motion, insisting on tho amendments, was carried by 182 to 52,
