ENGLISHMEN V. AUCKLAND. o-®-*—« PRESS ASSOCIATION Auckland, Saturday. The England-Auckland Cricket Match commenced yesterday, and was continued to-day in line weather. There were upwards of 3000 spectators. Auekland, who had lost 3 wickets for 19 ou the first day, took this total to 195. Hemus (64) and Iladdon (56 not out) played fine all-round cricket; neither batsmen gave a chance. Simpson-Hayward got a lot of work on the ball, and took 6 wickets for 36. MOTU V. POVERTY BAY ELEVEN
The Motu cricketers played the final match of their tour against a Poverty Bay eleven at the Viotoria Domain on Saturday, The day wbb fine, but a strong wind gave the bowlers a big advantage. Hallamcra won the choice from Reed and batted, Gorman and MoOonDell opening tho innings. The latter knocked up 20 quiofcly, tho score including a splendid drive on to thß road for six. He skied one back to Mr McDonald. Callan was bowled by Rowe when he had sooted 23. J. Gardiner wbb nioeiy taken in the slips by McDonald, off Campbell, when he had sacred 15. Gibson shared a similar fats after reaching his half century. Campbell was the most destructive bowler. He kept a splendid length, and had tho batsmen in troublo all tho time. Thirty-five runs were scored off 23 overs, and he bagged six wickets. Reed, McDonald, Dercoaurt, aad Rowe secured a wioket apieoe. Derocourt bowled 14 overs at a oost of a run pet over. Be kept a good length, and rooked them in with the velocity of a shot from a catapult. Motu replied with 64, Rows making 31 (not out). He gave a oaanca to Gibson in the country, bat othorwisc made no mistakes. McDonald made 11- Campbell was .stumped by Hallamore, off Robinson, before ho got going, and Derecourt went baok first ball. Robinson five for 21 and Torkiogton four for 12 divided bowling honors. Gardiner got one wioket for 5. Motu followed on, and put up a score of 98. Dereoourt mads 29, W. Reed 20, and Baigent 20 (not out). Hallamore, Cate, and McOoll secured best bowling figures.. Considering the little praotioe the Motu men have had, and the exertions of three bard days’ orioketi the form shown was excellent, and the team oaD always be depended npon io give a good aooount of itself.
