PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Sydney, Dee. 15, Tho bulk of the returns aro yet incam* plate. Tho absentee vote introduces considerable delay in Touching a finality. Mr Wcss, a comparatively unknown man, polled heavy in tho Socialist interest against Mr Reid, The latter obtained 7054, and Mr Wett 5856, Bosh Mr Chapman and Sir W. Lyne had overwhelming majorities in Victoria, Mr Deakin polled 12,903 egaintl Mr Soullin’s 6420, with further unimportant roturns to oomo. Sir John Quick had a tussle with a Socialist at Bendigo, securing the seat by 500. At Curios there was a straight-out fight between a Ministerialist and auti-Scoialist. Croucb (Ministerialist) polled 10,134, and MoOay 8268 Bcih sat in the last Parlia ment, Mr Wtso (Ministerialist) beat Mr MoLaan by 98. Analysing tho new Senate, tho anti-Socialists cannot account for moro than two majority, Mr McLean, a member of Mr Reid’s Cabinet, has lost his seat. Nearly ail the iiati-Sooiaiiata in Victoria were declared followers of Mr McLean, and his defeat heightens interest in the sisuatiou. Mr Keating, a Ministerialist, got into the Sanato for Tasmania. In Western Australia threo Sooiuliata, with Mr Pearce, an old member, are ahead, and the party have a strong lead for She Senate. Only one chaugo took plaoe in the House of Representatives, Mr Hodges,, an anti Socialist, replacing Mr Carpenter, a Labor Socialist, for Fremantle. All the old members were returned to the House for Tasmania except Mr Cameron, an antiSooialist, who was defeated by Atkins, of the samo party. Io South Australia the silting members were re elected, with the addition of Mr Livingston for Mount Barker.
Ia tbe Lang division Mr Johnson, an anti Socialist, boat the Socialist candidate by 6300 voios, Mr Sydney Smith was defeated by Mr Oarr, a Sootulisi, by 370. Mr Watkins, a Socialist, boat an anti' Socialist for Newcastle by over 600. Mr WatsoD, at South Sydney, polled 1007, Mr Graham 7600. A Socialist, Mr Burns, ran well against Mr Hughes, a member of Mr Watson’s Cabinet, at West Sydney. Hugbos polled 7525, and Burns 6014. The anti-Soaialiat bunch for the Senate have a gap of 40,000 votes between them and the Labor Socialist ticket. At Melbourne Dr. Moloney boat Mr Lorimer, anii-Sooialist, by 3400, Mr Bonald, a Ministerial Socialist. gave way to Mr Matthews, Labor Sjoialist, at Melbourne. For Melbourne ports Mr Fraser, an anti<-Sooiahst, polled 164,883, and Mr McCall, anti-Sooialist, 162,972. Mr Tunniolifie, a Labor Socialist, leads for tho Senate. For Bourke.Mr Cook beat a Socialist by 2500 voles.
