Tho quarterly meeting of tho abovo Oommitteo was held at noon yesterday. Present : The obairmau (Mr Barton, 8.M.), and Messrs Somervell, Darton, Hepburn, and Tombloson. Tbo olork of tho Court read tho follow--108 POLICE REPORTS. Sorgoant Williams reported that the licensed houses in tho Gieborno polioo district during tho quarter ended Daeembor 7lh had boon well conducted, and no report to tho oontrary had bmn received, except in tho eases mentioned herosficr. Tho lioonseo of the Esosrd .U-ign Hotel had boon charged in the Police Court that on September 15:h ho had refused So admit the sergeant while in the execution j of hia duty without unnecossry delay, but Shis ohargo had been dismissed by tho g.M. on tho ground that the p.’l'C’ had no ground for suspecting t-hao the provisions of the Licensing Acts were being violated. The men found on the premises of the Record Reign Hotel a. the same time were, howovet, oonvictud and fined. A charge against tho licensee of the Tur&ngaoui Hotel of supplying liquor to an intoxicated person on November ‘doth bad also been dismissed. Iho lioenoee of iho Woerenga a-h'ka Hotel had been oonvioted and fined icr exposing liquor for sale during prohibited hours on Sunday, iho 4th ult., and ihr. n men had I been oonviotod and fined for being on tho J Waerenga a-hika Hotel primuses on tb*>» day. Continuing, Sergeant Williams reported : “Oj tho 6th iuat., Constable ' Hancox, while Handing on tho roadway outside, from 1130 to ddO ani, indications of gambling iu the Record Align Hotel commercial room, the ch -uqi; o* money aod arguments about gamoliog j slakes, and on m iking his presence known by sayiog, 1 Don’t argue. I'll oama aud do it for you,’ the lights io this room ware soon extinguished. On tho 9th insf. Constable Hancox aDd I entered She commeroial room of too Rsoord Ro’go Hoiol a» 10.7 p.m. We found the licensee sitting in the room in company with two men. There had apparently been no attsinpt made to close the hotel, and ii wat ouiy on tho entry of the polioo that the lioonseo bestirred himself to comply with the law, Ho was warned as so his conduct in business la faturr.” The Chairman said with reference to the Record Reign Hotel, that tho conduct of that house was most unsatisfactory, and if it did not improve by She next meetiog of the Licensing Benoh, the licensee would be called upon So Bhow cause why bis liosnso shoulddolbe oauoelled undovoiausc 76 of the Lioanriog Act. (Mr Barton read the clause referred to.) If it could be proved to the Committee that a licensee was conducting his house in ao improper manner, the Committe had 'tho power under the clause mentioned to ask the licensee lo show reason why his license should not be oanoelled. In the oase mentioned it showed a state of things anything bui oieditable to the licensee. Io the case of She TuraDganui Hotel, though the evidanoe was not sufficient to record a conviction, there was quite enough to show that the man Dougherty was supplied with liquor when u should have been refused, The Benoh recommended lioenseos in future, before they supplied liquor to persons, to satisfy themselves that the persons supplied were not in a slate of intoxication. There was not, in the opinion of the Bench, enough care taken in this direction, and they trusted this reminder would have the desired effect. With reference to the WaercDga-a-hika Hotel, Sergeant Williams reported : “ The oonduot of business in Ibis hotel had, up to the 4lh iust, not been good. Priestley holds a temporary license of these premises, and during bis occupancy has improved the plaoe both inside and oat. The structure itself, however, is

somewhat shakyi aud will require either extensive repairs or a new building altogether in the near future." Constable Doyle’s report on the Moin accommodation house stated that the lioensae had not commenced the improvements orderod, the reason being that materials oould not bo got there owing to the road being impassable. With the exception of Waerenga-a-hika floteh there was nothing worthy of being brought before the Committee in regard to the oonduet of the other hotels in his distriot.

MOTU HOTEL. Application for renewal of accommodation license at the above hotel was made by the licensee, Christian Hanson. Tne Bench granted tho application provisionally upon the additions and altera* tiona being oarried oat before the nest quarterly meeting. A letter was also pat in from tho licensee saying that tho Moiu road had been impasaabio for traffic, and it was impossible to get tho necessary material up;

The application was granted conditional upon the alterations being made in aooordanoe with the plans submitted before next quarterly meeting. The Chairman said the Committee

knew how difficult it was to get work done ' m these plaoss, so they had allowed ample time. Mr Bees said the alterations wsro well in hand. There were two objtclions at tbe original meeting, one of whioh had been met, and if the Committee would meet on the 22ad January, the objection in regard to the transfer would also be met.

The Chairman thought ho would be able to take a meeting on the 22ad, as he hoped to be back by tbon.

WAEBENGA-A-HIKA HOTEL. This was an application for transfer of lioense from Cornelius O'Connell to George Patterson Priestley. Mr Nolan appeared in support of tho application. Tne Chairman stated that two members of the committee (Messrs Darton and Somervell) bad made a visit to this and other oouatry hotels last Saturday, and had found a very marked improvement in this hotel, whioh had undergone a great change. This being so and oertain other matters being sub judice, being the aubjeol of an appeal, he would abstain from say' ing anything about it. All he could aay was that hotel-keepers in future should abstain from Saaday trading. The application was granted.

KAWAKAWA HOTEL.

This was an application for temporary transfer from Thomas MoLaehlan to David Charles Hawkins. Mr Nolan appeared in support.—The police report offered no objection, and the application was granted.

Tho Chairman atalod with regard to tho WueroDga'Q-Kuri and Kaitaratsbi hotels, there houses had no bathroom?. Thera were no representatives of the houses present, and he hoped tho press would note the matter rnd call attention to it.
