Mr J. A. Gilrutb, Chief Government Veterinarian, left for Sydney by the Maheno on his way to Europe on a visit iu search of knowledge. After a brief stay in Sydney, Mr Giiruth will go on to the Old World by the first mail steamer, and will spoud the greater part of his six months’ leave of absence (taken at his own expense) at the London laboratories, and at the Pasteur Institute, Paris, studying the latest developments in bacteriology (of which ho has been au enthusiastic student for several years) and veterinary science generally. Mr Giiruth was entertained at dinner at the Hotel Cecil by a number of his personal friends, and tho chief members of his staff, the chair being occupied by Mr J. B. Maeiilwau, one of the earliest friends that Mr Giiruth made in the colony. The Chief Health Officer (1 r Mason) was also present. Hr Ooihns was absont on account of professional engagements. Mr Gilruth’s health was toasted with great enthusiasm, aad all present joined in wishing him bon voyage and a safe re« turn. During Mr Gilruth’s absence his duties will bs carried out by Mr C. J. Reakos, Assistant Chief Veterinarian.
