LATE NEW ZEALAND.
PRESS ASSOCIATION Wellington, last night.
Walii Kai, a Taranaki Maori, was liberated from the Terrace Prison this morning after serving 16 years’ hard labor. In 1S«0 Kai murdered an old man namod Stephen Maloney, who lived in a hut at New Plymouth. Robbery was evidently tljc motive of tho crime. Kai was sentenced to death, but on account of his youth—ho was only 17—the sentence was commuted to penal servitude for life. His discharge to-day was due to liis exceptionally good record whilst in gaol, and in some measure to the fact that at the tirno of the murder lie was unable to appreciate the gravity of lhs crime. Tho Crown has entered a nolle prosequi in .tho ease against O'Brien, a police constable who was charged with having robbed a man whom ho had arrested. Two juries have failed to agree in this ease.
