Some months ago Mr P, 11. Sargood, of Dunedin, sent to London a few samples of the toi toi grass grown in this colony, to 1 see if there was a market for it in England. When in California last year he saw fields of similar grass being grown for export to England and Europe, and it then occurred to him that something of the kind might be done with the toi toi which grows freely in some parts of New Zealand, The samples were reported on as follows by Mr Witt ‘ With reference to the toi toi grass I have submitted the samples to the most likely buyers hero and gather from them that at the present time it would bring from 40s to 60s per 100 kilos, equal to, say, HOs to 80s per cwt. If I had a few cwt here just now, I believe it would fetch 80s, but the estimates of the different dealers vary, as I say, from -10 sto 60s per 100 kilos. Unfortunately, the demand is decreasing, and there is nothing like the quantity used that there was a few years back. However, there is a small demand for it, and its price would leave a margin. Probably the best way to test the market would be to send Homo a small quantity, say five cwt,. for me to dispose of to the best advantage, If you decide to do this please note that the stems are of no value and would require to ho i cut oif to within about three inches of the i grass, similar to the samples sent. My < recollection of the article is that it is all | about the same color as your samples, but 1 if it can be had in pure white, it would be ' worth considerably more than the cream, < probably 525 pes coat.” i
