Further particulars are to hand by mail of the savage attack made recently by one of tho prisoners in tho Parramatta gaol on tho deputy-governor, Mr Quaine. The prisoners wore lined up for inspection, and the deputy-gaoler was checking oil the names, when a prisoner who was employed in tho shoemakers’ shop suddenly drew a knife from his clothing, where ho had it concealed, and plunged it into Mr

jjuaine’s breast. Before making the lunge he prisoner struck the deputy-governor in

The blade just missed tho base of tho heart, hut, making a gaping wound about an inch and a quarter long, entered the lung. Mr Quaine seized his assailant, and handed him over to tho charge of a warder, and then went on with his duties, not being aware at the moment that he had been severely stabbed. Shortly afterwards, however, ho became faint, and the wound was then discovered. Dr. Violette, the Government medical oiliccr, arrived shortly after the attack, and attended to Mr Quaine, whose condition next day was regarded as somowliat serious. The prisoner is a desperate character, at present undergoing a sentence of ten years.
