During a discussion in reference to working at a meeting of the Palmer ston North Farmers’ Union, one of the members seriously advocated that applicants for work should be graded by the Gover mont on tho same system as is now applied to butter. Employers, he said, would thus be able to pay first-class men, tho others being remunerated according to grade. Tho suggestion was not taken up with the avidity that its proposer seemed to think it deserved.

On the afternoon of Wednesday (re* ports the Press)' the teachers and scholars of the West Eyreton School were considerably astonished to see a column of flame rising from the outermost portion of a fir branch ovor thirty feet from the ground.
