Mr Charles Verner’s Dramatic Company.
The Verner Company put “ Dublin Assurance ” on the boards at His Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday night, and a few hours’ hearty merriment was assured for all who wore present. The life and soul of the piece was, of course, Mr Verner himsolf as Sir Felix. Tho play was a threc-act comedy, in which Sir Felix, a happy-go-lucky Irishman, has many reverses of fortune until at last, in sheer desperation, he seizes an opportunity to pose as a doctor, and incidentally uses the card of a genuine doctor. Tho patient, a young man, turns out to bo malingering so as to be near his beloved one, and an “ understanding ” ensues much to the benefit of bir Felix. The complications increase when-the real doctor whose card has been made use of arrives on the scene, and in connection with whose affairs Sir Felix has been getting into some pleasant and some very awkward dilemmas. Just when Sir Felix has got to tho climax when he expects to bo hounded off as an impostor, he finds himself the hero of tho occasion, and gets all tho credit for a reconciliation .tho doctor and tho wifo from whom the lattor has been estranged., and also wins the gratitude of tho young and old. Miss Rene Gough daintily took the part of Julia Revere ; Miss May Bradley was a stately Mrs Majoribanks, and Miss Gertrude Esdaillo put plenty of life into tho part of Betty O’Hagan. Colonel Revere was taken by Mr Richmond Roy, Charlos Revere by Mr John Lambort, John Bullock by Mr R. J, Oswald, Thomas Aguainas by Mr T. Arnsdale, and Dr. Majoribanks by Mr Frank Davenport. The comedy was further brightened by some enjoyable songs and dances. To-night the Company play “ Arrah-ma-Pogue,” with which Mr Vornor’s rnmjo has been most creditably associated.
