NEW ZEALAND.

PRESS ASSOCIATION Palmerston North, last night. A fire occurred here soon after six o’clock this morning, a four-roomed dwelling and shop in Eangitikei street being partially destroyed. The pro mises were occupied by J. K. Cohen as a general store. The insurance on the stock, which was greatly damaged by smoke and water, was £250 in the Commercial Union office. The building was insured for £2OO in the United office. Cohen accounts for the outbreak by saying that on Sunday night last he was robbed of £ls, and therefore kept a candle burning by his bedside all night. The curtain became ignited, but he does not know how. John Moughan and Susan Cole, who were committed for trial by the S.M. yesterday in connection with the alleged illegal operation, and by him refused bail, appealed to Mr Justice Chapman this morning to be allowed bail, on the ground that there was no reason why they should be dotained until the trial, which takes place early in March next. His Honor reserved his decision.
