Mr Charles Verner’s Dramatic Company.
7ho season which opens to night at His Majesty’s Theatre promises to prove h very successful one. For the opr-niug production Mr Charles Yerner ond his talented organisation has cke -en “Shamus O’Brien.” Auckland reports concerning this recent venture indicate that a theatrical treat of more than usual interest and merit is to be
afforded Gisborne playgoers. Every report speaks well of Charles Yemen, his company, and tho plays he is presenting. Mr Yerner is an actor of the modern school, who believes more in I the power of suggestion than the physical demonstration, and to this has been ascribed his wonderful suc-
cess. •It is often a source of wonderment even to local residents what causes the popularity or unpopularity of plays amoDg Gisborne audiences. Anyway, it is certain that we someI times see mediocre companies drawing large houses, and at other times real merit disheartened for lack of attention. The point is that “ Shamus
O’Brien ”is good. It is a drama l cleansed of its too frequent ragings and handling and damaging of furniture and nerves in a boisterous struggle for effect. A critique from the London Era says: “Never has tbere been put forward a story more
inteusely interesting while so true to the facts of life and character as Charles Yerner’s ‘ Shamus O’Brien.’
Such a convincing and fascinating character could only have been con-
csived by such an actor as Mr Charles Yerner, whoso interpretation is mag-. [ nificent.” “ Shamus O’Brien ” will claim public attention to night, and is to ba followed by such interesting plays as “ Arrah-na-Pogue ” on Saturday, “Dublin Assurance” Monday, and ‘' Robert Emmet ” on Tuesday. The plan for reserved seats is on view at Miller's.
