Walter Henry Mitchell, William McVhorson, and Patrick Opporkuch, convicted of tho confidence trick, were sentenced by Judge Cooper to five years' imprisonment eachThe returned bowlers were formally welcomed by the New Zealand Bowling Association at the Grand Hotel this forenoon, in the preseme of a number of local bowlers. Mr Payne said the object of tho visit, to bring tho bowlers of the Commonwealth in touch with the bowlers of New Zealand, had been accomplished. He felt certain now that visits would be paid every year, with test and intov-State matches played throughout tho different States. At the Cnristchurch tours ney in January they would hare the I best bowlers from Australia. He denied there bad been the slightest approach to friction during tho tour. Auckland, last night The steamer Dorset has arrived from Liverpool, and brings 285 immigrants, 61 for Auckland, the bulk being for Wellington. The men are mostly young, able-bodied, and healthy" looking. Many have wives and families.
Thames, last night.
Henrietta Willetts, aged five years, died at the hospital as the result of burns The little one was playing in the yard, and is'supposed to have had matches. Her parents heard screams, and founl tho child envolopel in flames She received fearful injuries i.o her head and the upper parts of the I body. The case was hopeless, and the child died after being a short time in the hospital.
Wellington, last night. At the Supreme Court to-day prisoners were sentenced as follows : Frederick William Jones, three charges of forgery, twelve months, concur:eat; Edward Fowler, breaking and entering, nine months ; Wilfiam Samuel Willis, forgery and uttering, admitted to probation for twelve months ; John Fitzroy, carnally knowing a girl under sixteen years, eighteen months ; John Connell, forgery, three years, and eighteen months for indecent assault on a boy ; John Edward I Lisher, assault and robbery, two years ; Francis O’Brien, attempt to commit an unnatural offence, twelve months. Christchurch, last night.
J. 0. Bagnail was to-day found guilty of forging the name of O. G. Stead to a cheque for £8 odd, a-.d uttering the same to Kean- th Hath' - sm, draper. The accusrd was c>n - ruitted to the Supremo Court for sentence.
