The Australian struck the reef with great force. Rocks pierced her hull in several places. Who lies hard and fast. There was no panic, all aboard exhibiting great control. Tho crew are standing by the steamer, which is close in shore.

PRESS ASSOCIATION—-COPYRIGHT Received 19,13 p m., Nov 20. Sydney, Nov 20. Latest advices from Port Darwin state that tho steamer Australian is likely to become a total wreck. There arc bad holes in the bottom owing to the grinding of the rocks. All attempts to get the water under have so far failed. Salvage steamers are expected to reach the scone this evening. The Australian lies on an outlying reef of Yashon Head at the entrance to Port Essington, 110 miles from Port Darwin. The steamer struck at 0 o’clock on Saturday night. The weather was dirty, j The strong tide running set the vessel in shore. The steamer Wailioi, which was in the vicinity at the time, took oil the passengers.
