Lord Plunkei, accompanied by the Premier, Lady Ward, Hon. Mr McNab, and Messrs Arnold and HanaD, M.H.B’s,, visited the buildings in the afternoon, and were ebown over them by the Mayor, Mr Soandrett, and Borough Councillors, s The evening funotion was principally )f ohoral, and went exceedingly well, the e acoustics proving good. e The Mayor presented Lord Planket q with a handsome gold key, and asked him c to declare the boilding opsn for publio t Eis Excellency, iu doiDg so, com- . mended the enterprise ,6f tho oitizene. t There might be some who considered the , building pretentious, but there was every \ indication that the town and distriot was so prospering that it would before long be fully required. Sir Joseph Ward also spoke in praise of the buildings, deprecating faint-heartedness in the matter of oost in a town that was bound to go ahead. The town ball proper faces Tay street. It stands on a section given to the carr poralion some years ago by Gjovernmonf.
It has a highly ornate faoade, and contains ample accommodation for the transaction of the town’s business. The council also retain rooms. Viotoria Hall seats 400, with kitohen and supper room kitchoo, etc. The theatre at tho rear oan be colored through the town hall, but is well detached from it. It has also an entirely independent accese. It is a lofty, plain building, with seating for over 1000, fitted with eleotrio and gaslight, water service, and numerous fire esoapss. The fire station is on the same area, faoiog Eek street.
