The Chronicle states that the New Hebrides Convention was a necessary logical sequel to the Convention of 1887, the latter establishing a joint naval commission accepted as a compromise by Australian opinion. Doubtless it had not satisfied a large body of Australian sentiment, but the present agreement prevented complications which were otherwise possible, renders dual control operative, and removes Australian grievances regarding French methods of acquisition of land and importation of arms and alcohol. It was hard that Sir Edward Grey should be accused of humiliating Australia when owing to the trend of foreign, policy he obtained concessions hitherto denied.
