RAGING IN AUSTRALIA.

THE DERBY

PRESS ASSOCIATION - COPYRIGHT Melbourne, November 5. In drizzling rain the half-dozen candidates for the Derby stripped for the contest. Poseidon, who was tho great centre of attraction, was the picture of condition, and his supporters declined to admit the possibility of his going under The New Zealand jockey, Hewitt, had a mount on Ellis, but even that failed to gain the Hotchkiss colt much support. Ellis was the first to take advantage of the start, and with lolaire, Booran, and Poseidon in. attendance swept out of the straight, and rattled along the riverside with a substantial lead. The lead was, however, reduced before the abattoirs were reached, where the favorite had moved up on lolaire, the pair being at the heels of Ellis. At this point Antonius made a forward move, and took the vacancy alongside Booran, while Poseidon was just in the 1 wake of the leader. Ellis held command until the heads were turned for home, I when the severity of the pace began to tell I its tale, and soon the Hotchkiss colt retired, leaving tho favorite at the head of affairs. Then a shout arose that the favorite walks in, but meanwhile Antonious had drawn up, and just as Poseidon took charge, Antonius came out in pursuit. Clayton on Poseidon quickly took in the situation and drove the favorite along. Antonius was not to be denied, and in a few strides drew level. Entering the last furlong Antonious was on the outside going apparently better than Posiedon, but when called upon the latter responded with all his bulldog courage, and in the exciting hand-to-hand engagement for nearly a furlong gradually shook Antonius off, and beat him cleverly after an exciting finish 1 by a length and a quarter. Booran was a 1 bad third, and lolaire was last It was a > fast and true run race, and beyond question the best horse won.
