CYCLING AND POLICE.

(To the Editor of the Times.) ■g- u ._ While ■' Owner of a Bicycle ”is of -eours'e entitled to his own opinions as to whether cyclists should, be shown consideration or not, his illogical conclusions call for some answer. It would almost appear that he only read the heading under which you placed m.v letter and not the letter itself, otherwise lie would not have jumped to the conclusion that I approved of cyclists riding without lights or that I was a “ crusty old bachelor,” for I distinctly 'disclaimed any sympathy with the cyclist •who rode without a light, because such a practice was a menace to pedestrians, and further said that personally I had no .objections to perambulators being wheeled .■upon the footpath, but such a practice was quite as illegal as riding a bicycle upon it,

X contended that if the one class of people were entitled to consideration at the hands •of the police so wore the other, and that •the police had no right to discriminate. If the writer does own a bicycle it is pretty certain that lie does not ride it, for if be did he would be well aware that pedc-s----•farjans arc in no more danger from a cyclist who rides his bicycle upon the footpath in a proper manner than they arc from a person wheeling a perambulator. No one sympathises with the “ scorcher,” and it is sip on this class the police should be active in enforcing the law. I still hold that as ' BO lifctfc consideration _is paid to_ cyclists .(who are .of course in a minority) they should combine together to enforce public .attention to .their grievances, and if possible to get tbe Borough Council to attend ,-fco then* requirements in the same manner ithat local authorities do.in some other .towns. —I am etc., ? JSTOT A VICTIM,
