PEESS ASSOCIATION Auckland, last night. At the ]?olico Court John Connell, with several aliases, who is at present serving nine months for similar offences in Auckland province, admitted obtaining £3 12s at Kakaimea from Arthur Fharley by means of a valueless cheque. He further admitted obtaining goods to the value of £l Lis Gd from the care of Frederick Frederick* sen, of Mangakuaka, by means of a valueless cheque. Asked why he had committed the offence, accused said he only “ broke out like this ” when he had had drink. His Worship said he thought accused was a fit subject for an indeterminate sentence, and remanded him so that inquiries could bo made as to whether the Indeterminate Fentenco Act was applicable. At a meeting of the Auckland Trades and Labor Council a resolution was passed expressing regret at the action of the Hon. George Fowlds in voting against the preference to unionists amendment moved in connocti in with the Mining Act Amendment Biii, and trusting that ho would furnish a reasonable explanation to the Council.
Wairoa, last night. The alleged Maori leper at Waikaremoana has been cured of his loathsome skin disease by the assistance of Mr Curran, Maori missionary. The young man, who was a mass of eruption, was isolated and dressed in female garments, as he was unable to wear his own. He has now been restored to health and is attending school.
