EAST COAST NEWS.
PORT AWANUI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A native named Hemi Tapeka met with an accident on Saturday evening, which resulted iu his death on Tuesday morning. It appears ho was mak* itig for home pretty smartly, when his horse put his foot in a hole iu the To Horo and Awauui road, and foil, rolling over deceased, fracturing his skull and injuring his spine, boino of his friends wanted to send for the doctor, but the ivlaori tohusga said ho could cure him quicker than the doctor, with the result that the patient died without recovering consciousness. No inquest was hold. Shearing is now in full swing on many stations, there being fine weather, with westerly winds. n r H. Hill, Inspector of schools, was in Awauui on Saturday.
(From Our Own Correspondent.), Cricketers on cue Must Coast are docidediy keen ; the majority of the players iu the Waipuo team which visited Xoiago Bay lust Saturday, travelled over 50 miles to take part in the match, and ono member el the team travelled no leas than 70 miles tho day before tho match, and over rough hilly country too. This speaks veil lor cue energy and enthusiasm of Coast players, and the game should prosper when such men follow it up. l'iio form shown in the game at Tolago was on tho whole satisfactory for the opening game. Ludbrook was in particularly good form with the bat; going in first in tho first innings he lost his wicket just at the close of the innings, being caught and bowled for 32 ; in the second innings he went in first and carried his bat through the inmugs, being not out with 32 to his credit. Nurse was also batting nicely when he had the misfortune to play a ball on to his wicket, just as he looked good for a big score.. Tolago Bay were unfortunately without tho services of several of their host batsmen, but nevertheless T horburn, Smith and Dr Weekes showed a strong defence and took a ion of shifting. Tolago is tt'eil off for bowlers, and Thorburn, Keid, and Wmuiki, the native, sent down a lot of good bowling, keeping an excellent length and bowling very few loose ones; Dr Weekes also effected a separation with his slows just as a stand was being made. Tokomaru should be strong th’s year as they w ill have B. Cottenll playing, and with the three Cotterills, Kelley, Busby, Connelly, Murphy, and W. Oates, they should be hard to beat. I am told that there are good practice wickets at Waipiro and Tuparoa, and that the players are hard at
practice nearly every evening, so it is to be hoped the other districts will do likewise, and from present in-
dications tho present season promises to be one of tho best we have had. I
hear that there is a prospect of arranging a match for tha 9th November between W aipiro Bay and Tokomaru.
