ARRIVAL OF DISTINGUISHED VISITORS. MIMIC THERMAL SPRINGS.

Ohristohuroh, last night. The Government steamer Tultnoka arrived in Lyttelton from Wellington at 145 p.m. to day, and was berthed ut No. 2 wharf, whoro the Vice Regal train was in wailing. The party included Lird and Lady Piunket, the Hon. Kathleen Plunkot, Major Bingham, A.D.O , and Oapt. Brailh waitf, A.D.0., Mr H. 0. Watei field (private seoretsrv), Sir Joseph and Lady Ward, and Messis B. Wilson and FAndrews, priva e secretaries. As the Tntanekai steamed through the moles a salute of 17 guns was fired by H.M S. Challenger, a largo party of blue jackets from the warship forming a guard of honor, Captain Bridsan and his officers being presonl to reoeivo the visitors as they landed, after which the general salute was sounded, and the Challenger’s band played the National Anthem. A trial of the thermal springs model 1 was carried out very successfully at the Exhibition this afiornooD. Dr. Wohlmvnn has made an excellent im tatiou of the i tbormal phenomena of tbe Rotorua dis- t triot, inolading mud volcanoes, steam I holes, a geyser, and a hot pool. In the trial the geyser played twic ■, throwing f water to a height cf twenty feet, Somo s Maoris from tho pah wore present, and J one or two youngsters stripped and jumped in tho hot pool, where they dived for coppers, and another roalisiio touch was givoo to tho exhibition by tho cooking of potatoes in a steam hole.

Christoburob, lasi night The programme for tbe Exhibition opening oeramony provides for tbe commencement of proceedings at 11. SO a.tn , when His Excellency the Governor and party will bo reoeived and escorted to their plaoee by the President (Sir Joseph Ward), Vice-Presidents,Executive Commissioners, Chairman of the Executive (Hr 0. M. Gray, M.H.R.), and members of the Ceremonial Committee, The National Anthem is to be played by tbe Wooiston Brass Band and tbo j orohestra as the prooession thus formed files through tbe main corridor, and sung by tbe ohoir when the vice regal party has reached the seats ailotied for its use. Immediately thereafter the ode written by Mr Johannes C, Andersen is to bs rendered by the ohoir (oomposed of mem" bers of the Musioal Union) and the orohestra, oonduoted by Mr Alfred Hill, R.O.M.L , composer of the mnsio. Having briefly recapitulated tbe main features oonnoosd with the mevsmeot to wards inaugurating and completing the Exhibition, Sir Joseph Ward is to present a gold key to Lied Pmnket, a jewelled gold pase to Lady Piunket, and a gold i pass to Lady Kathleen Piunket, request-* —iog Hie Excellency to doolare tbe Exhibition open. The Governor will reply So the Premier’s address, and afiec the Old Hundredth Psalm has been sung by those present, will declare the Exhibition duly opened. 1

Although only those who have reoeived official invitations will be admitted to the building in the morning, the public (iooludiog season ticket -holdarr-) will have access to the grounds for the purpose of witnessing tbe cavalry demonstration and military ride within the sports enclosure. At the conclusion of the openiog ceremony (about 1 p.m) the Exhibition will be thrown open to the public, tbe signal for which will be the playing of the National Anthem by the massed bands. At 2.30 the speotaoular series of military evolutions oenueoted with tbe trooping of the colors is to bs given by a large body of volunteers, assisted by officers and men from tbe warships in port.
