A great portion of the State forest at Husky Sound was destroyed by lire on Saturday afternoon. A fierce wind prevailed, and the fire swept the forest from end to end. Rain stopped the fire at night. The outbreak originated through five fishermen boiling billies on the bank of the river. Mrs Christina Ross, living apart from hev husband, made two attempts at suicide. She had been arrested for stealing jowellery. She attempted to open the veins of her arm, and then ate some match heads. She is in no danger.

Invercargill, last night. Before the local Magistrate, Mr McCarthy, to-day, _ Percy Charles Douglas and Jessie Colyer were charged with the forgery of educational and birth certificates, with a view to misleading the general manager of railways. The evidence showed that Douglas applied for the position of cleaner on the railways, and gave his age as 18, and stated that he had passed the sixth standard, whereas he was 19 and had only passed the fourth standard. The boy was brought up by Colyer, who forged the documents, Douglas being aware of the fact. Accused, who admitted the correctness of the evidence for the prosecution but reserved their defence, were committed for trial.
